How submesoscale physics delivers nutrients that fuel the spring phytoplankton bloom.
Coupling a submesoscale-resolving model with a simple ecosystem model, I showed that mixed layer eddies do more than restratify the upper ocean: they supply nutrients from below the mixed layer that enhance the spring bloom — an exchange that coarse-resolution models miss even with eddy parameterizations.
